 Homeschool Level 2 Courses

Level 2 brings the most motivated students from every Level 1 class together in one place. A smaller group, a deeper focus, and a chance to progress at a pace that a weekly community class can't always accommodate. Three courses, three pillars each one building on the last, each one going somewhere level 1 was never designed to take you.

Level 2.1

What to Expect

This is home study done differently. No video modules, no Zoom calls. Each week students receive lessons through a private Discord community and work through journaling, mapping, and sit spotting with guidance from instructors and peers. Over the course of the year they build their knowledge in biology, taxonomy, ecology, and botany. At the end of the year every student's work comes together into a single published collection

Prerequisites

  • Students must complete 2 years of Making Tracks Homeschool Level 1 courses.

  • Students must complete 1 Keeper Role of their choice -hidden missions included.

Level 2.1

Desired Outcomes

To go deeper into the natural world you have to learn its language first. The naturalists of old did it through observation, reflection, journaling, and mapping and that's exactly what this course is built around. Students come out with a shared ecological foundation — a working understanding of taxonomy, botany, and ecology — that every Level 2 and 3 course builds on. Without it the advanced skills don't have anywhere to land.

Level 2.2

What to Expect

A hands-on series of skills workshops held at a dedicated location with access to specialized tools and materials. Through demonstrations and open project time, students work on the kinds of things that a weekly community class just can't accommodate: pack baskets, bows, stone oil lamps, herbalism kits, and more. Everything students make they take home. These aren't crafts, they are tools for future courses.

Prerequisites

  • Students must complete 3 years of Making Tracks

  • Students must complete Making Tracks Homeschool Level 2.1

  • Students must complete 3 Keeper Roles of their choice -hidden missions included.

Level 2.1

Desired Outcomes

A different kind of learning that requires patience, spatial reasoning, resource management and tolerance for starting over. We want students to build a connection to the materials they learned about in 2.1. Students will walk away with a deeper appreciation for these skills not as crafts but as tools for survival and growth. The grit it takes to finish a bow or basket is something you carry with you. These works of art are not optional; what students make here is essential for future courses.

Level 2.3

What to Expect

Level 2.3 takes place at locations across Utah. Each site brings a different ecosystem, different terrain, and different challenges. Students will apply everything learned in previous levels, the knowledge from 2.1, the skills from 2.2, in real conditions in the field. Challenges and activities in this class go far beyond games in the level 1 classes. Nature has a way of showing you exactly where you still have work to do.

Prerequisites

  • Students must complete 4 years of Making Tracks.

  • Students must complete Making Tracks Homeschool Level 2.1

  • Students must complete Making Tracks Homeschool Level 2.2

  • Students must complete 5 Keeper Roles of their choice -hidden missions included.

Level 2.1

Desired Outcomes

You can know a skill and still not own it. Level 2.3 is where students find out the difference. They leave with the assuredness to care for themselves and others across a variety of environments using the knowledge and tools built throughout Level 2. Resilience, adaptability, and self reliance stop being concepts and become something they have actually tested in the field. That's the bar for Level 3.
